Vacation

I just returned from a one-week family vacation in Boston; we visited almost every major tourist attraction: science museum, aquarium, art museum, natural history museum, Prudential Tower, duck tour, Trinity Church, public library, and the Christian Science Center. We also spent several days with Christine's relatives who live near Boston.
Conference

Christine and I attended a marriage conference. We attended this same conference eleven years ago so this was more of a refresher for us rather than a lot of new information.

Christine and I attended the 129th Anniversary Salvation Army Banquet. It was good to hear about the dedicated service they are still performing.
Vacation

I just returned from a six-day family vacation to the Historic Triangle in Virginia. This small area contains the first permanent English settlement in America (Jamestown), a well-preserved colonial capitol (Williamsburg), and the final decisive Revolutionary War battle (Yorktown). We also played tennis, drove go carts, and visited the Baltimore Aquarium.

I traveled to Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania to pick up one-half of a grass-fed cow and a dozen chickens from a New York state farmer. We have been buying grass-fed beef for several years because it tastes better and is more healthy.

Soghomon Nuyujukian's memorial service took place today, with about two-hundred people attending. An obituary also appeared in the newspaper this week.

Father-In-Law Dies

My father-in-law, Soghomon Nuyujukian, died at 2:35pm today at the age of 85. He was diagnosed with cancer in late July, but declined treatment and agreed to home hospice care. He served as a Protestant minister for sixty years and has lived with our family since I got married in 1989.

Matthew returned from Worldview Academy at Lancaster Bible College. He spend twenty-five hours listening to speakers talk about Christian and non-Christians ways of understanding the world.
Mission

Luke and I just returned from a five-day mission trip with the Pittsburgh Project. We went with our church group. We spend most of the time painting and doing yard work at this home in Pittsburgh. We also visited the Duquesne Incline and the Nationality Rooms in the Cathedral of Learning.

Christine, Luke, and Catherine headed to Wildwood, New Jersey so Luke and Catherine can compete in the National Marbles Tournament. The finals are on Thursday. Luke was a semi-finalist last year.

Our family attended my twenty-fifth reunion at Columbia College in New York City. One-hundred of the seven-hundred graduates attended, and I saw a few friends I haven't seen in years. When I attended, Columbia was an all-male college, and I had forgotten how much male camaraderie we had there.

Peter in Opera

Peter has completed his last opera performance. The theatre was full for every show, with lots of applause. We will miss the Curtis performers we met. Peter's involvement started two weeks ago, with practices or performances almost every day, and it ends as abruptly as it started. (image, image, image, image, images, review)

Science Fair

After participating in the Greater Phiadelphia Homeschool Fair, Matthew and Luke competed in the Delaware County Science Fair with 280 other students.
Luke received first place in all of middle school in Botany. He also received the Delaware County Science Teachers Association Award, and, he received the best project in Botany for middle and high school. Matthew received the second place award for biochemistry. This allows both to move on to the Delaware Valley Science Fair, April 1-3.
Ethel Waters

Christine, Matthew, and I saw Ethel Waters: His Eye Is on the Sparrow at Hedgerow Theatre. The play has received standing ovations at every performance, and now I see why. Ethel Waters' insecurity at being born illegitimate, her mistrust of whites, and her inability to love anyone is resolved in a way that is both unexpected and completely believable. Back from Europe

I just returned from a trip to Belgium and the United Kingdom. I attended a conference in Brussels and visited the EnterpriseDB offices in London and Oxford. Luke came with me on this trip.
Peter in Opera

Peter has been cast as Little Lorca in the opera Ainadamar. It is being performed by the Curtis Institute of Music at Philadelphia's Kimmel Center (home of the Philadelphia Orchestra).
Rehearsals start March 4 and the performances are March 14-16. Tickets can be purchased online. This is Peter's first opera and first performance at a large downtown venue. (opera music samples, article about Peter)

We attended the Mummers Parade (history) today in Philadelphia. Usually we see the string bands but this year, because the parade was delayed, we saw the fancies. My brother's family attended with us.
