Greater Philadelphia Homeschool Science Fair 2008

We survived the Greater Philadelphia Homeschool Science Fair which was held at Villanova University on Feb. 9th! This year all four children participated. Matthew and Luke will continue to the Delaware County Fair, which is on March 2nd and 3rd. That means the next month will be busy for them with more experiments.

Catherine's project came in 3rd for 1st grade, it was titled "Which Brand of Nail Polish Will Last Longer?" She tried a few brands, and we found out that Revlon Colorstay at $3 a bottle lasts much longer than Estee Lauder at $18 a bottle.

Peter's project came in 2nd for 4th grade, and it was titled "Which Fluid Is Best for Cut Flowers?" He discovered that if you don't want to do anything to your flowers (change water, cut the bottoms), water with flower preserver is best. But, if you don't mind cutting the bottoms and changing the water every few days, water with sugar is the best!

Luke's project came in 3rd for 7th grade, and it was titled "What Type of Light Helps a Plant Grow?" His results were surprising. The plant in incandescent did the best overall.

Matthew's project came in 1st for 10th grade, and it was titled "'The Role of Water in the Enzymatic Activity of Lactase". He also won the outstading project for 10th grade. He also won best of high school!! Wow. He received a fabulous microscope. We were very happy for all of them!
