We had no electric power for a few hours today while a transformer was replaced in front of our house. We had been using a temporary transformer for the past six months.

College

Matthew returned from College, having completed his first semester. He is now one-eigth done college. He wrote a musical composition for one of his classes (sheet music).
Europe

Peter and I returned from a conference trip to Germany and Italy. In Germany we toured Heidelberg and visited the Mercedes-Benz Museum, Porsche Museum, and a transportation museum. In Italy we visited the Colosseum, Roman Forum, St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican Museum, and Hadrian's Villa.

Luke's online game guide is selling well. He sold ten copies in the past three days. He is now advertising on the RuneScape Wiki, which recently improved their advertising options. Luke is learning about sales, marketing, and customer service. Purchasers get a custom download link as soon as they pay via Paypal.

Matthew spent the day serving with a medical helicopter crew. During his shift he landed on a hospital roof and flew a critically injured traffic accident victim to the hospital.

Everyone except Matthew started a weekly tae kwon do class at Proclamation Presbyterian Church. Yes, Christine and I are also taking the class.

Everyone except Matthew visited the Amazing Maize Maze in Lancaster. We have been wanting to go for years but this was our first visit. It is a maze made of corn (maize) and was difficult, both physically and mentally. It took us almost three hours to complete.

We just got electric power back after 54 hours; a ferocious storm passed through our area on Thursday afternoon. Thanks to a borrowed generator, we didn't lose any food.

I attended the Chick-fil-A Leadercast, a one-day business-oriented leadership telecast from Atlanta attended by 50,000 people. The best speaker was John C Maxwell (video from 2007). I plan to attend next year.

Matthew received the huge John Marshall Scholarship (details) from Franklin & Marshall College, where he will be attending in the fall. The scholarship is named after the early American statesman and longest-serving Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Marshall.

Catherine and I returned from an overnight business trip to New York City, Matthew headed to Dallas for a robotics competition, and Wilma is returning Monday from Syria after being delayed by the volcanic ash.

I attended an Iron Sharpens Iron men's conference in Harleysville, Pennsylvania. One of the speakers from Denver called this the "Pennsylvania Bible Belt", which many thought was funny.

Matthew and Luke participated in the Delaware Valley Science Fair. Matthew received an honorable mention from the American Society of Highway Engineers. He also won the silver medal for 12th grade behavioral science.
Vacation

My family just returned from a 4-day vacation with my parents and my brother's family at Woodloch Resort in northeastern Pennsylvania. We enjoyed many activities, and my brother Chris won the gold medal for skeet shooting.

Matthew has been accepted at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and will be attending there in the fall. During his college search, he visited eleven schools and applied to four. His selection criteria was that the school should be liberal-arts oriented, academically challenging, provide meaningful teacher interaction, have quality research facilities, and not be too far from home.

All four children entered the Greater Philadelphia Homeschool Science Fair. Catherine and Peter won second place awards for their grades, Luke, third, and Matthew, first. They will continue at the Delaware County Science Fair (DCSF) on March 8th.

Luke and Peter's RoboWhizards team won awards in both Programming and Robot Performance in the regional First State FIRST Lego League competition. They will continue on to the next level of competition in Delaware on January 30.

We attended a theatre performance of The Adventures of Harold and the Purple Crayon, which was adapted from a children's book. Everyone enjoyed the play. We then ate at our favorite South Philadelphia Italian restaurant, Villa di Roma.
